When it comes to breast cancer health, Komen Columbus has always advocated that the best protection is early detection. Our overall mission has always been to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people and ensuring quality care for all.
Komen Columbus does not only service the residents of central Ohio. We actually have a 30 county service area home to more than 2.7 million people. We have done much research on the demographics of each region so that we can better service each area. Fourteen of our counties have more people below the poverty level than both the state and national average. Comparing rates of insurance, both private and Medicare/Medicaid, 77 percent of our service area has a higher proportion of uninsured females than the state average, and 13 of the counties have more uninsured females than the national average. This leaves so many women potenially unable to receive proper healthcare and breast cancer screenings.
While these statistics can be shocking and even a little disheartening to hear, Komen Columbus is committed to bringing quality healthcare to each and every individual in need. The rural and Appalachia counties within our service area face the greatest problems to access to providers and facilities offering breast health services. Thanks to the dedication, hard work and support from the Komen Columbus Grant Programs, we are able to continuously offer community outreach events and FREE screenings throughout our service area to guarantee as many women as possible to get the proper coverage.
Next month, we already have five dates set up throughout our region offering numerous services suah as pap tests, pelvic and breast examinations, breast cancer education and vouchers for mammograms for uninsured and underinsured women. Thanks to our large network of volunteers, grant committees and university affiliates, all these services are provided at no cost to those who choose to be involved.
Along with these five specific events, Komen Columbus has continuous opportunities offered year round to those needing assistance. OhioHealth, a regional healthcare system that provides managed care and operates several hospitals throughout central Ohio, has been a long standing friend to Komen Columbus. They have been corporate sponsors for the Komen Columbus Race for the Cure for a number of years and we work hand and hand together to provide as much education and quality care to all those in need.
