Stefanie’s Champions

Each year at the Komen Columbus Race for the Cure, many of the teams registered are to honor those who have been affected with breast cancer in some way. One of the most well-known teams in Columbus is Heather and Stefanie’s team, which honors the lives of two fellow Columbus residents, Heather Pick and Stefanie Spielman. Heather Pick was a former WBNS-10TV news anchor in Columbus and Stefanie Spielman was wife to former OSU Buckeye’s linebacker, Chris Spielman. Both had very public battles with breast cancer and helped to raise substantial funds for the Ohio State Comprehensive Cancer Center – The James Hospital.

Both Heather and Stefanie became advocates for the cause here in Columbus, and joined efforts in order to spread knowledge and awareness for breast cancer research. One of the most prestigious events to be created was Stefanie’s Champions. Stefanie Spielman established Stefanie’s Champions in 2000 to recognize one of the most important elements in recovering from cancer: the loving, healing presence of a caregiver. In Stefanie’s case, such support during her battle with breast cancer came from her husband, Chris, who put his football career on hold to take care of her when she was diagnosed. It was her hope that every cancer survivor can name someone who stood by them, gave them courage and helped them through.

This year marks the 10th year for Stefanie’s Champions and the event took place on April 13, 2010 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center located downtown. The event began at noon and a luncheon was held with more than 500 people in attendance. During the luncheon, there was a discussion on the latest news in breast cancer research and education followed by the award ceremony. Komen Columbus was in attendance for this year’s ceremony and it was such an inspiring experience! Every year we hear stories of strength and love from survivors and we are honored to be a part of such a great cause.  Stefanie’s Champions annually honors those whose dedication and strength were powerful influences in the lives of cancer survivors. The event benefited The Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research.
