Last week marked the anniversary celebration of the Komen Young Professionals, a group that was formed in October 2009 to give a voice to young professionals interested in getting involved in the fight against breast cancer. Since the first meeting last year, we have been so impressed with the motivation and determination of all our members.
In less than a year we held seven events ranging from cocktail hours downtown and in Dublin to an educational breakfast with a young survivor to fundraising at the Whole Foods’ Giving Grill. We also had a KYP Team at the 2010 Race for the Cure, with 25 members raising more than $2,400. It was important to the founding members that the group not just hold social events, but really increase education and awareness to young men and women about basic breast health and breast cancer awareness.
Just a few months ago, the committee elected 10 members to sub-committee chair positions. Now we have volunteers in charge of driving membership, organizing volunteer opportunities, coordinating events and increasing fundraising. We also have members working on increasing involvement among students of local universities in Komen Columbus activities.
We are so proud of all our KYP committee members and co-chairs and look forward to another great year as we bring the fight against breast cancer to another level.
