Medical Advisory Council

This year saw the formation of the Komen Columbus Medical Advisory Council (MAC) – a diverse group of health care professionals dedicated to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure mission in our affiliate’s service area. This council was the vision of Rosemary Riley, the affiliate’s current Board President, who saw the value of engaging physicians, nurses, and others in an ongoing dialogue regarding their unique expert views with respect to breast cancer prevention and care.

The council began quarterly meetings in April with three purposes in mind. Komen Columbus has a focus on serving those at risk for and affected by breast cancer in 30 counties in Central and Southeastern Ohio. The Medical Advisory Council will help the affiliate in outreach to medical communities throughout the service area, to learn how to effectively assist them with resources and education. Forming connections with local healthcare communities will allow Komen Columbus to identify “Community Champions” to work locally as part of this outreach. In this way, Komen will be able to more fully and accurately ascertain community needs and identify potential grantees for funding of worthy programs with the more than $2 million raised through various affiliate activities, the largest of which in the annual Race for the Cure in Downtown Columbus.

The Medical Advisory Council is also charged with medical education development for the service area. Support of breast health education, along with the funding of screening and treatment grants are the key responsibilities of Komen Columbus. Until this year, these critical initiatives have been focused on the non-medical community. The council is working on the development of educational workshops and seminars that will help physicians, nurses and medical staff learn more about current breast cancer screening guidelines. The MAC feels another subject of importance is that of breast cancer survivorship issues and this topic will be further examined in partnership with the recently formed Survivorship Council.

While the national office of Susan G. Komen for the Cure provides a great deal of medical information related to breast cancer, the Komen Columbus MAC is in the unique position to offer a local perspective on these topics. Members will be available for guidance and commentary as needed for local media. In the upcoming months, Komen Columbus newsletter readers will enjoy articles written by council members in their areas of expertise. Stay tuned for interesting newsletter articles and more from our dedicated MAC members!
