Join the Beauty All Over Team on Race Day

A message from Darlene Matthews, 2013 Komen Columbus Race for the Cure Honorary Chair.

When I started by first Race for the Cure team in 2002, I had nine members.

In 2012, I’m very proud to say my daughter and I had a team of 176 walking next to us and we made quite an entrance into the Race with our pink afro wigs, fairy wands and tu-tus. Our t-shirts said: “Poof! Breast cancer be gone” and every team member that gets involved, volunteers and fundraises, helps us accomplish just that.

This year our t-shirts will read, “Feel ‘em to Save ‘em” and will encourage all team members, (hopefully 250 men and women), to practice breast self-awareness and know what’s normal for their bodies. Early detection saves lives and that’s a message I’ll repeat over and over again until everyone is aware.

I hope you’ll join me as a team captain for this year’s Race on Saturday, May 18, 2013 in downtown Columbus. As a breast cancer survivor myself and someone who has benefited from a Komen Columbus-funded program, there’s no better joy than the excitement and hope in someone’s face who is attending the Race for the Cure for the first time.

It’s hard to believe that one day could provide a year’s worth of hope and strength for someone going through treatment, but it does. Race day also serves as an opportunity for us to remember those we’ve lost to this disease and pledge that we’ll continue fighting so their battle is not in vain.

I’ve also seen first-hand what Komen funding can do for the community. Providing a mobile mammography van at a homeless shelter or giving someone hope because even though they may not have insurance, they can still receive a mammogram. Help us do more in our community and serve more men and women.

Registration is open online here.

If you have any questions about setting up your team, please download this document or contact Becca at the Komen Columbus Office, beccathomas@komencolumbus.org or 614-297-8155 ext. 202. Better yet, attend the Team Captain’s Fiesta on Thursday, February 7th at the Park Street Cantina in Columbus. More information is available here, but just by attending you’ll be eligible to win a $100 gift card to Easton Town Center.

Need even more of a reason to form your team today? Register your team online by Friday, January 25 and you’ll be entered in to win a $25 gift card to Easton.

I look forward to seeing all of you on Race day and dare you to top my team’s t-shirts this year!
