Getting Muddy for the Cause

Written By: Nicolle Racey, Director of Communications at Komen Columbus

I am not a big fan of working out but I am a fan of having fun. So when exercise doesn’t feel or look like a workout, then sign me up! That’s why I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to participate in the Pretty Muddy  5K Run at Mad River Mountain on Saturday, September 14. Pretty Muddy

A obstacle course, huge water slide, a climbing wall, and army crawling through mud, costumes optional!– this isn’t a work out but a good time!

What makes this event even more meaningful to me is that by registering and using a special code (KOMEN), $5 from my registration will be donated to the Columbus Affiliate of Susan G. Komen.  As a staff member at Komen Columbus, I know firsthand how many women and men depend on the local breast health services our Affiliate provides in our 30-county service area. I also know how many survivors, undergoing treatment, depend on the research we help to fund.

I recently met Karee Van Runkle, an extraordinary 13 ½ year metastatic breast survivor who told me that Susan G. Komen’s breast cancer research has kept her alive. The average length of survival for metastatic breast cancer is 2-3 years. Komen has had a hand in researching or developing the majority of the medication Karee’s taken since her diagnosis.

So if Karee, and other survivors, can take the rigors and pain of their treatment, I can certainly (and willingly) get muddy for the cause.

Who’s with me?
