We’re excited to announce that the Race for the Cure is expanding beyond the streets of downtown Columbus to the brick streets around Ohio University! In partnership with the Ohio University School of Nursing, we will be launching our inaugural Athens Race for the Cure in Athens, Ohio on Sunday, October 25, 2015.
Susan G. Komen Columbus has supported 30 counties in Southeastern and Central Ohio for many years and we look forward to bringing a new race to the Athens community and surrounding counties. Since 2000, Komen has funded $4.5 million in programs exclusively to support and educate the women in southeast Ohio.
The Athens Race for the Cure will help support programs that address the needs of women in Southeastern Ohio, which has a screening rate lower than that national average. Improving access to screenings can mean the difference between successfully treating early-stage breast cancer and losing a loved one whose diagnosis came too late.
The new race will also help us address issues that can get in the way of healthcare, such as transportation, access for the uninsured or underinsured, and a lack of awareness about the importance of early detection.
