Congratulations to our December Volunteer of the Month: Dr. Deepa Halaharvi!
Dr. Halavarvi has an interesting perspective to breast cancer – as a a breast surgeon at OhioHealth she has helped many women with her professional training but as a recent breast cancer survivor she relates to her patients on emotional level because she has experienced hearing, “you have breast cancer.”
“Deepa uses her own personal experience to educate women on the importance of annual screening each day in hopes that she can save a life, just as her mammogram saved her own,” said Natalie Guagenti, volunteer and events manager at Komen Columbus. “We’re happy to have her as a Komen Ambassador. Her professional and personal experience really drive home the importance of Komen’s breast self-awareness message.”
Thank you Dr. Halaharvi for all you do to support Komen Columbus. Dr. Halaharvi shares with us, in her own words, why she volunteers for Komen Columbus.
What (or whom) inspired you to get involved with Komen Columbus?
My personal experience with being diagnosed with breast cancer and working as a breast surgeon inspired me to get involved with Komen.
What’s your favorite part about volunteering with Komen Columbus?
It is knowing that I am part of a team who shares the values and goals (ending breast cancer).
What is the most memorable moment or event you’ve experienced with Komen Columbus? And why?
I have number of memorable events but the two events that stand out in my mind are the church with Gail Birden-Totten and the “National Women’s professional organization”.
When you’re not volunteering for Komen Columbus, what do you like to do?
Spend time with family and friends.
