Meet the staff: Intern, Tara Zinser

You might remember the blog we did recently about Climb for the Cure. One of those climbers, Tara Zinser, is really getting her fill of Komen this year by serving as our events intern. Tara will be helping with all our affiliate events, including the upcoming Race, and we’re thrilled to have her! In her own words, here’s a little bit more about who she is and motivates her every day.

IMG_0435What events/people or experiences led you here to Komen Columbus?

My grandma passed away from breast cancer in 2015, so I raised money in her honor for the NW Ohio Affiliate during my senior year of high school. I learned a lot about the organization and about breast cancer, and I became very passionate about continuing to raise money and awareness. I decided to run in the Race for the Cure in Columbus and I made the honor roll and was invited to a celebratory event at the office, where I met most of the staff. Of course, Megan Montville and I are raising money and climbing Kilimanjaro together next summer, so that helped lead me here as well!

What do you do for Komen Columbus?

I’m the events intern, so I assist Kaki and Megan in whatever they need. Of course, I’m so excited for the race in May, but we’ve been discussing some smaller events and I can’t wait to help out with those either!

What (or whom) inspires you come to work every day?

Because my grandma passed away from breast cancer, I have always been passionate about raising awareness for breast cancer, and Komen has been the best place for me to do that. I already love everyone in the office, it’s such a great environment and I feel so lucky to be working here so early in my college career. My internship is one of my favorite parts of the week and it never feels like work because I just love being here.

TaraInternWhen you’re not interning, what do you like to do?

I’m a student-athlete at Capital where I’m majoring in Public Relations and playing volleyball. I’m also in the honors program and serve as the Public Relations Chair on our council, and I’m training to become a Young Life leader in Columbus!

What are your plans for next year? What are your goals for the future?

In the next year, I’ll be continuing to raise money for Komen through our Climb for the Cure fundraiser, and then going to Africa in July! Hitting our fundraising goal is one of my top priorities this year. I’m looking forward to being placed as a Young Life leader in March, and I’m excited for the opportunities that will bring. In the next few years I’m planning on graduating and staying in Columbus, and working as an event planner at a small business, a non-profit, or by launching my own company. Of course, I plan on working closely with Komen for as long as I can!
